Choose around the order you need to control
A QIMA alternative may be worth considering when your factories are in Asia and you need an inspection partner whose confirmed scope, local availability, reporting and follow-up fit a particular order. A smaller company’s size alone does not establish better service. Ask both providers to explain how they would handle the same factory, product and shipment decision.
Start with the decision: qualify a new supplier, catch production problems, approve finished goods, or supervise loading. Then compare written proposals for that task. This guide helps you shortlist a provider; the linked checklists cover the detailed inspection work.
When each provider model may fit
QIMA lists inspections, supplier audits, laboratory testing and certification among its services. Its public materials also describe customizable checklists and an online platform for booking, reports and quality data. Customization and digital reporting therefore need to be evaluated with both providers; they are not exclusive advantages of a smaller company.
01
An Asia-focused shortlist
Consider Asia Product Inspections for factory audits and product inspections in China, Vietnam, India, Indonesia, Pakistan and the Philippines. Confirm the exact factory address, product expertise, available date and agreed deliverables before booking.
02
A broader program
If you need one program across several regions, formal certification or a particular laboratory route, assess providers with that confirmed capability. Check the required standard, product category, facility and destination-market acceptance rather than assuming that a broad service list covers your case.
Treat claims of faster replies, lower prices or closer support as questions to verify in a proposal and trial assignment. Company size cannot prove them.
Seven questions to compare inspection providers
Send the same brief to every shortlisted provider and record the answers below. An unanswered item is an open question to resolve before booking, rather than evidence that one company performs worse.
| Decision area | Ask both providers | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Factory coverage | Can you attend this address on the required date, with experience of this product? | Written location, date, travel and equipment confirmation. |
| Scope and sampling | Which SKUs, sample quantities and separate function tests are included? | Approved checklist, sampling plan and exclusions. |
| Independence | Who selects samples and how are conflicts of interest handled? | Sampling procedure and escalation contact. |
| Report quality | Can we identify the affected SKU, requirement, result and photo for each finding? | A redacted sample report relevant to your product. |
| Communication | Who confirms the scope, reports urgent findings and answers questions afterward? | Named roles, working hours and agreed report deadline. |
| Total cost | What happens if the lot is unready, the visit changes or reinspection is needed? | Itemized quote, cancellation terms and reinspection fees. |
| Service limits | Which checks cannot be completed on site, and which formal evidence is outside scope? | Written exclusions and any separately required specialist work. |
Compare the work behind the price
An inspection day rate is only one input. Compare inspector-days, travel, the number of SKUs, sampling, available equipment, reporting, taxes and follow-up on the same basis. Ask whether a multi-SKU order uses one pooled sample or defined coverage per variant, and which checks have their own test quantity.
For example, one proposal may cover visual checks on a mixed sample while another includes barcode scans by SKU and assembly checks on a separate sample. These are different assignments. Ask each provider to price the same required work before deciding which quote offers better value. No price ranking between QIMA and API is asserted here.
Match the service to the decision
Use the order’s risks to select checkpoints. A new supplier may justify an audit before commitment; a repeat order with stable production may need a different plan. You do not automatically need every service listed below.
| Decision | Service to consider | What it helps establish |
|---|---|---|
| Select or scale a supplier | Factory Audit | Observed capability, production organization and quality processes; not proof that a future batch will conform. |
| Check production startup | Initial Production Check | Available materials, components and first units against the approved requirements. |
| Correct problems before completion | During Production Inspection | Progress and emerging defect patterns while corrective work is still possible. |
| Review finished goods before dispatch | Pre-Shipment Inspection | A representative sample once goods and packing are sufficiently ready under the agreed plan. |
| Verify the loading event | Container Loading Supervision | Visible container condition, carton counts, loading and seal details; not a substitute for product inspection. |
Test the sample report and follow-up process
Ask for a redacted report for a comparable product and walk through a failed finding with the provider. You should be able to understand what was checked, what was inaccessible or untested, and what evidence supports the result. Agree when urgent issues will be raised and when the full report must arrive, leaving time for a decision before dispatch.
- Lot and SKU identification, actual sample quantities and the selection method.
- Measured results against your tolerances, defect counts and clearly linked photographs.
- Packaging and label observations, equipment limitations and incomplete checks.
- A clear result and a route for questions, supplier correction and any separately agreed reinspection.
The buyer retains the shipment decision under its contract. A sampling pass does not establish that every unit is defect-free or replace any required certification.
Two ways to apply the comparison
These are illustrative sourcing scenarios, not client case studies or claims about either provider’s past performance.
01
A new furniture supplier in Vietnam
The first decision is whether to place an order. Ask for an audit covering the relevant equipment, production flow and quality controls. If the order proceeds, use its risks to choose later inspections for dimensions, finish, assembly and packing. Compare providers on their proposed method and relevant report, without assuming all checkpoints are necessary.
02
A multi-SKU Amazon FBA order in China
The immediate issue is whether finished goods match the approved variants and preparation brief. Ask each provider to specify SKU coverage, product checks, packaging, labels and recorded barcode scans where agreed equipment permits. A label photograph alone does not show that it scans. Provide your current marketplace requirements and approved files.
Prepare one brief and verify the first assignment
If you change providers, transfer the latest approved requirements rather than forwarding an old report alone. Remove obsolete revisions, identify open defects and make sure the supplier accepts independent access to the goods. Agree a realistic report deadline before any contractual payment or shipping milestone it is intended to support.
- Factory address and contact; product, SKU and order quantities; production and packing status.
- Purchase order, specification tolerances, approved sample reference, artwork, labels and packing instructions.
- Known defects, agreed acceptance rules, required on-site tests, target dates and escalation contact.
After the first assignment, compare the report with the agreed brief: were required checks completed, limitations explained, urgent findings raised and questions answered? Use that evidence to decide on repeat work.
How Asia Product Inspections may fit
API’s active services are Product Inspection, Pre-Shipment Inspection, During Production Inspection, Initial Production Check, Container Loading Supervision, Factory Audit and Social Compliance Audit. Share your product, factory location, order stage and target date so the team can confirm the relevant scope. Country-level coverage does not guarantee availability at every address or date.
API does not offer or coordinate laboratory testing. Arrange any required formal testing or certification separately with a suitably qualified organization. On-site inspection evidence serves a different purpose.
FAQ
Questions about QIMA alternatives
01Is Asia Product Inspections a QIMA alternative?
+
It is an option to evaluate for factory audits and product inspections in API’s six Asian sourcing markets. Confirm factory-specific availability, product expertise, sampling, report content and follow-up. It is not a like-for-like replacement for every service in QIMA’s broader portfolio.
02Is a smaller company cheaper or better than QIMA?
+
Size alone proves neither. Compare itemized quotes for the same location, date, sample, tests and reporting. Evaluate a relevant sample report and the handling of your first assignment before making claims about service quality.
03Does QIMA also support custom checklists?
+
Yes. QIMA’s public checklist-management page describes customizable inspection checklists. Ask both providers to confirm your approved requirements, sampling, equipment and exclusions in writing rather than treating customization as a difference based on company size.
04Can API inspect outside China?
+
API covers China, Vietnam, India, Indonesia, Pakistan and the Philippines. Confirm the precise factory location, product type, service and date before booking.
05Does an inspection replace laboratory testing or certification?
+
No. Inspection records the agreed on-site checks and their limits. Arrange any required formal testing or certification separately with a qualified organization. API does not offer or coordinate laboratory testing, and an inspection pass is not a legal compliance guarantee.
